Rugby 2001 was EA Sports second effort at a Rugby union game. It was created by creative assembly, and is arguably better than Rugby 2004 is some aspects.
The game only had 20 international teams but was kept alive by wave after wave of patches created by the users. Some of these patches were even created by me, eg my Sevens patch, NPC patch and many other patches were created by Dom (now admin of www.TheRugbyForum.com). It is because of these patches it may be the rugby game I have played the most.
It was originally made to come out on the PSone, but was changed to the PS2 halfway through the development, so this was the first game of the second generation of consoles.
